Wilfred Ndidi’s father, Sunday, died in a car crash in Nigeria on Tuesday morning, Besiktas said in a statement.
The Istanbul club expressed its sorrow and offered condolences to the midfielder, his family and loved ones.
Ndidi joined Besiktas last summer in a £10million move from Leicester City. He spent eight years with the Foxes and lifted the 2021 FA Cup after victory over Chelsea in the final.
The midfielder made more than 300 appearances for Leicester, including 220 in the top flight.
At the Africa Cup of Nations, he featured in four of Nigeria’s opening five games before injury ruled him out of the semi-final against hosts Morocco. Nigeria lost on penalties, then won the third-place play-off against Egypt on spot-kicks without him.
He scored in a 3-2 group-stage win over Tunisia, marking the moment with a celebration that referenced his father and Nwankwo Kanu.
