Neymar’s next move remains unclear. After the World Cup with Brazil, he is in the United States and is due to report to Santos at CT Rei Pelé on 17 July, with his deal running until 31 December.
According to Globo.com, Santos owe him more than R$ 90 million in image rights, with payments extended to 2030, and relations with NR Sports are cordial. Inside the club there are doubts over his plans after the round of 16 exit, and whether the goal against Norway, sealing a 2-1 defeat, could be the 34-year-old’s final act.
Continuing at Vila Belmiro looks the natural path, though the matter is being handled with caution. Santos contest the Brasileirão from 16, plus the Copa do Brasil and the Sudamericana. They face Universidad Central of Venezuela in the play-off, first leg away on 21, and his inclusion on the trip is uncertain.
Despite the return date, he is described as fed up after years of injuries and the pressure of being Brazil’s leading star. Retirement talk intensified after his father publicly urged him on social media to continue. Stopping now could also create contractual hurdles with personal sponsors.
The current break, and a possible farewell to the Seleção, could ease the strain. Interest from FC Cincinnati has cooled, but MLS retains the means to tempt him this half-year with a lighter schedule. Other veterans such as Messi, Suárez and Son have taken that route.
