Will Smallbone ‘to sign’ for Russell Martin at League One Leicester | OneFootball

Former Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone is reportedly set to reunite with Russell Martin at League One Leicester City.

The Telegraph reports that the 26-year-old will sign on a free transfer for Martin’s side, having previously played under him during Southampton’s promotion campaign.

Smallbone has been without a club since his St Mary’s contract expired this summer, following 10 appearances on loan at Millwall last season. A Basingstoke-born academy product, he made 90 appearances for Saints and was a key figure in 2023/24.

He scored the goal that put Southampton ahead against West Brom in the play-off semi-final, then set up Adam Armstrong’s winner in the final. He also spent time on loan at Stoke City, bringing significant Championship experience alongside 34 Premier League appearances.

The midfielder has earned 15 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland. Martin’s Leicester have made an underwhelming start, taking nine points from seven matches. He has also added former Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy on a free and academy graduate Kamari Doyle on loan from Brighton.
