With the summer transfer window fast approaching, Birmingham City and Wolves will be weighing up their plans, with both set to play in a competitive Championship next term.

For Wolves, their relegation from the Premier League has been known for some time, while Birmingham were in contention to reach the play-offs before their poor end-of-season form derailed that dream.

Not only must clubs decide which players they want to sign, but they will also consider which of their own crop they want to keep, and for the Old Gold, that is the case with Tommy Doyle, who spent the season on loan with the Blues.

Indeed, the midfielder's situation is complex as we analyse whether he could return to St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park this summer.

What is Tommy Doyle's contract situation at Wolves?

Doyle has two years remaining on his contract at Molineux, where he arrived from Manchester City in 2024 for a reported £4.3million, having spent the previous campaign on loan.

While he made 58 appearances for the Premier League outfit across two years at the club, these were mostly as a substitute as he failed to land a consistent first-team place.

When the Blues signed him on loan from the Black Country club, there was an obligation to buy the 24-year-old for £5million which would have been triggered if the club achieved promotion, which they obviously did not.

That means that Doyle will return to Molineux when his contract at Birmingham ends, but will he remain there once the Old Gold return to the Championship next season?

Would Wolves want to keep Doyle?

With Rob Edwards in charge, Wolves will certainly fancy themselves for promotion next term, but the second tier will be stacked full of clubs who fancy their chances.

It is expected that the Old Gold will lose some of their creative midfielders as a result of relegation, with Andre Gomes heavily linked with big clubs across Europe, while Andre and Angel Gomes are also likely departures.

That certainly opens the door for Doyle to remain at the Black County club, but he would surely need to impress Edwards before securing himself in his manager's plans.

The 24-year-old was a solid performer for Birmingham this season, but his future at Molineux may depend on whether Wolves bring in a higher calibre of midfielder this summer.

Could Birmingham sign Doyle?

While Wolves signed Doyle for £4.3million, the deal included a 50 per cent sell-on clause, meaning that City would be due half of his selling price.

If Old Gold were to make a profit on the midfielder, then they would need to sell him for at least £8.7million to yield any sort of profit on him, which is not cheap in the Championship.

The question for Birmingham is whether he is worth that figure.

This season, Doyle made 42 appearances in all competitions, but just under half of these were from the bench, which he occupied for substantial periods at the back end of the season.

As well as his four assists, he showcased his ability on the ball, ranking in the top 13 per cent of defensive-midfielders for accurate long balls, successful crosses and chances created, according to Futmob.

His defensive numbers were not so impressive, though, as he ranked around average for Championship players in his position for metrics like tackles and interceptions.

Perhaps Doyle's biggest selling point is his potential, as at 24, he has a couple of years before he reaches his peak, where he should be a top second-tier talent at the very least.

Birmingham, like Wolves, has promotion ambitions next season, and the feeling is that if a better player becomes available, then they would surely target him over the Englishman.

As it stands, Doyle will be a Wolves player this summer, and it would be unsurprising if it were to remain that way heading into the new season.
