Willian Arão stepped up his recovery at CT Rei Pelé on Saturday, beginning on-grass transition work after improving his fitness. According to Globo.com, the Santos midfielder is progressing ahead of the São Paulo derby.

Arão missed the meeting with Remo last Saturday in the 28th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. He had an issue in the internal oblique muscle of the abdomen and was cleared to start treatment.

He worked through the squad’s days off to speed up recovery. Even so, the early sessions this week kept him indoors with club physiotherapists.

There is a possibility Cuca could have Arão available for the back line against São Paulo, partnering Lucas Veríssimo. The coach is already without Luan Peres, suspended, and João Ananias, who is with Brazil’s under-20s.

Forward Álvaro Barreal will strengthen Santos for the derby. After two days of field-transition work, the Argentine took part in full training on Saturday.

Like Arão, attacking midfielder Neymar is in on-grass transition work. He is still recovering from a left thigh injury and should miss the meeting with São Paulo.

Santos also remain without goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão after surgery on his left shoulder and left-back Vinícius Lira, who is rehabbing a serious injury to his left knee. Midfielder Gabriel Bontempo is out as he is with the Brazil national team and suspended for the match.
