Williot Swedberg’s goal for Celta de Vigo at Mestalla on Sunday carried more than competitive weight. For a player with childhood links to nearby Godella, the ground is a personal landmark.
According to Superdeporte, Mestalla was where he first pictured his footballing dreams after his family sought Mediterranean warmth from severe Scandinavian winters.
As a youngster he went with his father, a former footballer, to the stadium on Avenida de Suecia to watch Valencia. He also played locally in the Godella CF academy.
After the match he said he had visited many times as a child wanting to play there. He added that he was very happy to do so now with Celta, and that his father was in the stands and became emotional.
Roughly a decade on from that wish, his first goal at Mestalla arrived, albeit in Celta colours. Football often turns full circle and perhaps one day it could be in the Valencia shirt he bought as a boy.
