Pending an official announcement, Claudio Giráldez has decided to keep Hugo González in Celta de Vigo’s first team. The former Valencia CF winger has been the standout of pre-season.
EFE reports he will be registered as a first-team player, take one of the first 25 squad numbers and play European football next season.
The key question at the start of the summer followed his breakout year with the reserves, where he was top scorer and central to Celta Fortuna’s promotion to Segunda División.
As he is no longer under-23, he could not alternate between the senior side and the reserves, forcing the club to choose between making him the Fortuna talisman in the second tier or giving him a first-team berth.
Six goals in four pre-season games have removed any lingering doubts for Giráldez, who has approved the permanent step up.
Valencia CF let him leave last season for performance-related bonuses and a 30 per cent sell-on, so any financial return will have to wait.
