FC Bayern made a sporting statement with their 5-1 win at RB Leipzig. In the mixed zone after the top match, however, the focus was not only on the impressive performance on the pitch, but also on a player who the record champions have been missing for weeks: Sacha Boey. Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl gave a rarely frank update on the Frenchman’s situation – and made it clear that patience is required
After the game, Eberl was asked about the full-back’s state of health and his words painted a clear picture of how badly Boey has been affected by the past few weeks. „He has lost a relatively large amount of weight due to the illness. He is now slowly building up and then we’ll see what happens,“ explained the 52-year-old in the mixed zone
Eberl thus confirmed that this is not just a short downtime phase, but a process that will take time. Particularly noticeable: the player’s loss of physical substance. For a professional whose game thrives on intensity, pace and robustness, such a weight loss is a considerable setback
When asked about a possible comeback date, Eberl was correspondingly cautious. „To be honest, I don’t have an exact time frame for when Sacha will be back. We have other things on our minds,“ said the Bayern boss. A statement that shows that Boey is not currently playing an immediate role in the team’s sporting plans

Eberl also commented on the illness itself. „Gastrointestinal, he really had the whole range,“ explained the sporting director. Boey has been missing from the Munich squad since the beginning of December due to a persistent stomach bug. Although the Frenchman briefly appeared on the pitch at the start of training on 3 January, he has been completely absent again since then
Boey’s situation is also explosive because the Frenchman has been considered a potential sale candidate for weeks. The right-back moved to Munich from Galatasaray Istanbul in January 2024 for around €30 million, but has only been able to meet the expectations placed in him in phases so far
According to rumours, both Crystal Palace from the Premier League and Boey’s former club Galatasaray are looking at a possible signing. However, the long break due to illness could become a decisive factor. On the one hand, it makes Boey’s integration into Vincent Kompany’s team more difficult, while on the other hand it raises questions about his market value and his short-term availability
For FC Bayern, this means a complex situation. In sporting terms, Boey is missing at a time when the defence is already struggling with personnel bottlenecks. Strategically, however, the signs are clearly pointing to a departure.
