VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed the unfortunate news that in-form lead striker Dzenan Pejcinovic will not be available for this weekend’s Bundesliga fixture against 1. FC Heidenheim. VfL head coach Daniel Bauer confirmed at a Friday pre-match press conference that Pejcinovic incurred a foot injury during Wednesday night’s league victory over St. Pauli. Despite this, the 20-year-old “gritted his teeth and eventually scored the winning goal“.
Bauer then confirmed Pejcinovic’s unavailability tomorrow.
Extremely vital. The Germany U21 international has literally scored four of his team’s last five goals across three Bundesliga fixtures. He’s also the only VfL player to score from open play in the last three games. Pejcinovic and his VfL colleague Christen Eriksen (who converted a penalty against St. Pauli) are the only Wolfsburg professionals to have turned the ball into the back of the opponent’s net for a team that recently set an own-goals Bundesliga record.
Pejcinovic found himself unable to live up to the potential he showed for country this season until he exploded for a hat trick in an ultimate losing effort against SC Freiburg just before the winter break. Now that he’s scored in three consecutive matches, Pejcinovic has quickly gone from zero Bundesliga goals in his professional account to five German top flight tallies.
Most likely Algerian international Mohamed Amoura, who was one of 11 Bundesliga AFCON representatives eliminated during the current ongoing continental championship quarterfinals during what has a brutal round for the 14 Bundesliga pros still alive in the tournament. Amoura featured as a substitute in the St. Pauli match on Wednesday. So too did Danish attacker Adam Daghim, who also appeared off the bench.
Amoura does function slightly better as a left lane attacker, but the fact that he worked as a center forward on multiple occasions during his Algerian AFCON tour-of-duty renders it likely that Bauer will simply plug his leading goalscorer in at the top of his 4-2-3-1. Amoura’s 2025/26 Bundesliga club campaign has once again been impressive. The 25-year-old has scored six goals and registered three assists in 15 league appearances.
