VfL Wolfsburg entered the October international break in an unquestioned state of crisis. Unfortunately for the German Wolves, the two-week-long hiatus didn’t help out at all. The resumption of Bundesliga play brought with it a humiliating 0-3 home loss against VfB Stuttgart. Wolfsburg wrap up the weekend just one point above the relegation playoff place.
Missing squad captain Maximilian Arnold (injured in a friendly loss over the international break) Paul SImonis’ team were absolutely manhandled by the visiting Swabians at the Volkswagen Arena. The latest loss no undeniably confers the status of relegation candidates upon Germany’s green company team.
Sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz went on an absolute tirade in the mixed zone afterwards. The 46-year-old did his utmost to defer the question as to whether Simonis would remain in charge. With the DFB Pokal coming up next week, it’s not exactly an ideal time to contemplate switching coaches.
“That was a total failure,” Schindzielorz said. “I’m very upset about an absolute disastrous performance. We didn’t stand a chance in any phase of the game and deserved absolutely nothing. The final [0-3] scoreline was absolutely deserved.
“We weren’t able to shake off the burden we placed on ourselves in Augsburg [in the loss just prior to the break],” Schinzielorz continued. “We’ve been carrying that for two weeks now and hoped that we would do better today; that we would have more energy. We definitely didn’t do that.
”We can’t complain about the reaction of the spectators at all, because we are responsible for it ourselves after delivering such a game,” Schindzielorz went on. “The performance of each individual player was simply not good enough. You can’t win a game in the Bundesliga like that. It was a total failure by the team.
“I think anyone who was here at the stadium today saw that it wasn’t a coaching issue,” Schindzielorz concluded. “But that we were simply inferior to Stuttgart in eleven positions and had no chance of really getting into the game. We have to see how we get through a tough schedule now.”
