Wolfsburg’s decision to fire sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz along with head coach Paul Simonis this week leaves the Bundesliga outfit urgently seeking some sort of stability. One report suggests the Lower Saxon Autostädter may be close to making a significant hiring statement by recruiting back a familiar figure.
Sky Germany – as relayed by transfermarkt.de – reports that Wolfsburg may be able to land Samsunspor’s current head coach Thomas Reis via a extremely cheap €200,000 release clause in the 52-year-old’s contract. Reis has found success since moving to the Turkish outfit in the summer of 2024.
Before rising to prominence as the head coach who helped VfL Bochum attain promotion (and remain in the league), Reis made a name for himself has the Wolfsburg U19 head coach. Many Bundesliga clubs sought his services before Bochum (where he spent the bulk of his playing career and began his coaching journey) finally launched his head coaching career.
Reis unfortunately went from the man who helped Bochum rise to the German top flight to the coach who couldn’t help Schalke 04 stave off relegation during the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign. Reis lasted only seven games with Schalke in the 2. Bundesliga during the 2023/24 season.
Reis lead Samsunspor to the Europa League last season and a respectable start this year. During his entire tenure in charge of Kırmızı Şimşekler, the team has only incurred 13 losses. Reis – who maintains a 50 percent plus win percentage with the club – has only lost once in 12 games this season.
