Daniel Bauer made no changes to the side that secured Wolfsburg’s first home win in eleven months. Apart from their elimination from the DFB-Pokal, Borussia Mönchengladbach were also in the right track with 13 points from their last five league encounters.
It was the visitors who started brightly here. Patrick Wimmer added to his goal last week’s strike with a superb finish from Lovro Majer’s excellent delivery in the third minute. The Austrian midfielder’s goal ended Gladbach’s clean sheet streak as they missed out on a club record.
The hosts responded with an own-goal from Konstantinos Koulierakis, who came very close to scoring at the right net a few minutes earlier. However, that didn’t change the flow of the game as Wolfsburg continued to push for a second goal.
And they succeeded with that as they scored twice in five minutes thanks to Christian Eriksen’s trickery. The Dane was first involved in Mohamed Amoura’s sixth goal of the season when the Algerian was on hand to score after Nico Elvedi’s clearance.
Eriksen then produced a no-look assist to Wimmer as Wolfsburg went into the break with a deserved 3-1 scoreline. Wolfsburg managed to keep the hosts at bay after the break as well. Amoura was denied by the woodwork from joining Wimmer with a brace.
Eugen Polanski thought his side were back at it when Haris Tabakovic scored with twenty minutes left to play, but the Bosnian striker was in a slightly offside position. A few minutes later, Yannik Engelhardt hit the post as Wolfbsurg once again wobbled in the final stages. Kamil Grabara also made a great save to deny Rocco Reitz in injury-time.
Gladbach saw their unbeaten run ended after five games. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg secured back-to-back league wins for the first time this season.
Wolfsburg will conclude the year with a home game against Freiburg as Bauer could stand a chance to be appointed as permanent coach. Gladbach will face Borussia Dortmund in the last Friday night game of 2025.
