Germany moved top of Group A with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland at Windsor Park, thanks to Nick Woltemade’s first senior goal.

The Newcastle forward glanced in David Raum’s corner on 31 minutes, settling a contest in which Northern Ireland gave as good as they got.

The hosts thought they had opened the scoring early through Daniel Ballard, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The visitors dominated possession early and created chances, but Karim Adeyemi and Serge Gnabry were unable to add a second.

Northern Ireland, boosted by the home crowd, pressed late through Ethan Galbraith, Shea Charles, and substitute Callum Marshall, but could not break through.

The win keeps Germany level on nine points with Slovakia at the top of the group, while Northern Ireland remain three points behind with two qualifiers to play.
