Wolverhampton Wanderers have reached an agreement in principle to appoint Cesar Peixoto as their new head coach, per Fabrizio Romano.

Wolves and the 46-year-old reached a verbal agreement, with the Molineux club moving to secure their preferred candidate ahead of the new season.

Reports from Portugal earlier suggested Peixoto had emerged as a leading contender to head the Wolves dugout.

It is a shocking decision to dismiss Rob Edwards, considering Old Gold played some of their finest football under him.

He was even in the video announcing the Raul Jimenez transfer, and this change of direction has come out of nowhere.

The Wolverhampton-based outfit are taking a huge gamble here with Peixoto.

Romano’s update indicates that the fairly unknown tactician will be in charge of Wolves next season, another addition from Jorge Mendes’ agency Gestifute.

Peixoto arrives with an interesting reputation after an outstanding spell at Gil Vicente.

He guided the Primeira Liga side to some of the best results in recent years and earned widespread praise for his attractive, organised style of football.

His work has earned him a reputation as one of Portugal’s most promising young managers.

He has attracted attention from clubs across Europe, but Wolves have secured his signature.

While final contractual details and compensation arrangements with Gil Vicente still need to be formalised, Wolves have acted decisively in identifying their next leader.

Peixoto remains under contract with the Portuguese club, but his coaching credentials and long-term potential have clearly convinced the Molineux hierarchy.

The appointment signals a bold change of direction following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League.

Rather than turning to a proven Championship figure, the club have opted for something different.

Peixoto has built a reputation for improving players, implementing a clear tactical identity and maximising resources at a club operating on a modest budget.

Those qualities could prove invaluable as Wolves attempt to rebuild and mount an immediate promotion challenge.

Supporters may not be familiar with his work yet, but he could prove an inspired pick-up.

Wolves have landed one of the brightest coaching talents in Portuguese football.

They will hope that Peixoto can spearhead a swift return to the Premier League, even though this feels like a needless gamble.
