Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed a deal to appoint Rob Edwards as their new manager.
Middlesbrough initially turned down their approach for the 42-year-old.
However, the Championship outfit subsequently gave Edwards permission to speak to the Premier League club.
Wolves have made the former Wales international their number one target after Gary O’Neil rejected the opportunity to return to Molineux.
Middlesbrough appointed Edwards in June. His team are fourth in the Championship table after recording seven wins from 14 games.
The lure of returning to Wolves, where he played as a defender between 2004 and 2008, has proved too tempting for Edwards to resist.
He will face a tough challenge to keep Wolves in the English top-flight. They are rooted to the bottom of the table after a winless start to the Premier League season.
Wolves lost Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri last summer, but failed to bring in quality replacements.
They haven’t kept a single clean sheet this season and have scored just seven goals in 10 league matches.
