Blues will be expected to bounce back quickly from Sunderland upset against a Wolves team in free fall

Chelsea will be looking for a swift return to winning ways when they travel to face struggling Wolves in the Carabao Cup last 16.

The Blues had recently belied their injury and disciplinary problems this season to deliver four consecutive victories across all competitions, though such an impressive run was brought to a shock and dramatic halt over the weekend as promoted Sunderland notched a 94th-minute winner in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea blew an early lead against the in-form Black Cats, missing the chance to go second in the table as they eventually slumped down to ninth following a 2-1 loss.

They will be expected to bounce back quickly and book a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals against a Wolves team in crisis, having edged out third-tier Lincoln in round three.

The hosts remain rooted to the foot of the Premier League having won none and lost seven of their first nine games this season, with Sunday’s last-gasp 3-2 home defeat by promoted Burnley in which they initially fought back from 2-0 down followed by heated post-match scenes at a toxic Molineux as fans expressed their frustration with the players and under-fire manager Vitor Pereira.

The Portuguese - who only signed a new three-year contract in September after steering Wolves away from relegation danger with a superb run last term - engaged in an angry post-match exchange with supporters and had to be escorted away as they chanted “you’re getting sacked in the morning”.

The Carabao Cup has been the only brief respite for Pereira so far this season, with wins over West Ham and Everton seeing his side reach the fourth round.

However, Cole Palmer and Benoit Badiashile are both sidelined until December, while Levi Colwill and Dario Essugo are long-term absentees.

Malo Gusto is back from suspension, while Mykhailo Mudryk remains unavailable.

Maresca will be expected to rotate and utilise his large squad at Molineux, with the likes of Joao Pedro, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo all dealing with lingering knocks that are preventing them from training fully - along with one or two other unnamed team-mates.

Wolves vs Chelsea prediction

The setback against Sunderland was unexpected for Chelsea after such a strong recent run as they left themselves simply too vulnerable while chasing a late winner.

But they could barely ask for better opponents in terms of quickly getting back to winning ways.

Wolves - who last won a league game in April - are in turmoil at the moment with simmering frustrations between fans, the manager and players boiling over in ugly fashion at the weekend.

We anticipate another away victory at Molineux, where another toxic evening could lie in wait.

Chelsea to win, 2-0.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Chelsea were victorious in both league games against Wolves last season, winning 6-2 away before a 3-1 triumph on home soil in January.
