The USA made it three wins out of three as they topped Group F with a 2-0 win over Sweden on Thursday.

Goals from Lindsey Horan and a Jonna Andersson own goal were enough for the States as they booked their place in the last 16.

The same couldn’t be said for Chile though, who needed three goals to qualify for the knockout rounds, but could only beat Thailand 2-0.

In what was a straight shoot-out to finish top of the group, it was the USA who came out on top in Le Havre.

The early tournament favourites took the lead inside three minutes as Horan tapped in from close range.

Jill Ellis’ side weren’t done there though and after the break doubled their lead when Andersson scored past Hedvig Lindahl.

Chile went into the game knowing that only a victory by three or more goals would be enough to take them into the last 16 as one of the best third-place finisher.

But things didn’t start well for the South American side as they struggled to hit the target in the first half.

With the scoreline goalless at the break, José Letelier’s outfit went for it but could only find the net twice – thanks to an own goal from Waraporn Boonsing and then an 80th minute strike from Maria Jose Urrutia.

It could have been a fairytale in the dying minutes, but Francisca Lara missed from the penalty spot.
