Wonderkid striker granted chance to join Andoni Iraola's Liverpool squad

We might soon see a true wonderkid striker join Andoni Iraola's squad. The opportunity has presented itself.

Liverpool have a striker problem. They went into this season with Hugo Ekitike injured, meaning Alexander Isak is the only available senior striker, with his backup being the relatively inexperienced Lewis Koumas.

Or at least, he was the only available senior striker. Now there aren't any.

Isak returned early from Sweden duty, having picked up an injury after a stamp. It's unclear how bad the problem is - we just know it was bad enough to rule the striker out of his country's final two fixtures.

Liverpool have to play this one carefully, then. Aggravating Isak's injury would be a disaster as a long-term issue leaves the Reds unbelievably short going forward. So even if he is back, Andoni Iraola needs to carefully manage his minutes.

Which opens the door.

Will Wright's big opportunity

Will Wright continues to light up the Liverpool Under 21 scene. He even took his talents to 'senior' level against Rochdale, scoring a magnificent goal in the EFL Trophy.

He looks ready, in other words, as the 18-year-old has continued on a fantastic development path for years now. Really, Wright hasn't stopped improving since joining Liverpool in 2025 and he's well on course for the first-team squad.

And it's opportunities like this that could see him break through. Ekitike is out, Isak must be monitored and Koumas hasn't nailed down his spot in the squad.

Yes, there's extra competition from Jayden Danns, for one, but Wright will undoubtedly be looked at in the coming weeks. Potentially with a view to some sort of minutes in the Carabao Cup - and possibly the Premier League.

It's foolish to have players on the level of Wright if you're not going to give them chances when they pop up. It feels difficult to believe that a better chance will come around this season or the next.
