Ethiopia is among several African nations whose stadiums do not meet international standards for hosting qualification matches. As a result, CAF has granted Ethiopia special permission to play outside its borders in their quest for a spot at the World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Against Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia will therefore play at Kigali's Amahoro Stadium.

In Group A, Ethiopia currently sits in sixth place behind Egypt. During their last two away matches, they lost 2-0 to Egypt and then to Sierra Leone.
