Only eight teams left to battle it out on football’s grandest stage
From 48 teams to the final eight, the tournament has firmly entered the business end after a thrilling - and one not-so-thrilling - set of last-16 ties.
All three co-hosts have been eliminated as Canada were comfortably beaten by Africa Cup of Nations champions Morocco and the USA were thrashed by Belgium following the Folarin Balogun controversy.
England played out what was arguably the finest match of the tournament so far as they edged Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling, emotional encounter at the Estadio Azteca. The Three Lions will face Norway, after Erling Haaland stunned five-time winners Brazil.
Tournament favourites France managed to edge Paraguay in a bitty encounter to book their progression, while Lionel Messi led Argentina to an astonishing late fightback against Egypt. Their prize is a quarter-final clash with Switzerland, who saw off Colombia on penalties.
A huge tie between rivals Spain and Portugal failed to live up to expectations, as Mikel Merino’s injury-time goal sent La Roja narrowly through. They will face Belgium.
