England set up last-16 clash against co-hosts Mexico
The World Cup 2026 round of 32 is well underway, with late drama and shocks aplenty.
Co-hosts Canada became the first team to seal their spot in the last 16 on Sunday, winning a knockout game on football’s biggest stage for the very first time as Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time strike saw off South Africa in Los Angeles.
They will next face 2022 semi-finalists Morocco, who held their nerve in a chaotic penalty shootout to dump out the Netherlands after a tense 1-1 draw in Monterrey.
That was after Germany had fallen victim to the biggest upset at the tournament so far, suffering their maiden World Cup penalty shootout loss as they were shocked by Paraguay following another 1-1 draw.
In Houston, Brazil got a last-minute winner from Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli as unlucky Japan went down 2-1 in another thrilling contest, while France barely broke a sweat in dispatching Sweden 3-0.
Mexico joined fellow co-hosts Canada in the last 16 by winning their first knockout game in 40 years, easily dispatching Ecuador to set up a clash with England after they survived an almighty scare to beat DR Congo thanks to a late Harry Kane brace.
USA made sure all three co-costs are through to the last-16 stage by beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0, though will be without Florian Balogun against Belgium - who beat Senegal - after the star striker was controversially sent off.
