FLW's Sheffield United fan pundit has weighed in on reports linking Gustavo Hamer away from Bramall Lane this summer
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Gustavo Hamer has been backed to succeed in the Premier League after being linked to a host of top-flight clubs.
It is expected that Hamer will not play for the Blades next season, as per talkSPORT.
Second-tier champions Leeds United and Premier League mainstays Everton are the clubs leading the race for Hamer’s signature.
Hamer was linked with a £13 million move to Elland Road last summer, although he has since dismissed that it was a realistic possibility.
FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit, Jimmy (aka Blades Ramble), hopes to hold on to their star player this summer, but understands the extensive interest held in Hamer.
“Gustavo Hamer is a Premier League quality player, there is no doubt about it,” stated Jimmy. “He's won the Championship Player of the Year and that is based purely on his ability and what he can do on his day.
“The negatives about Gus Hamer surround his fitness. It's rare that he lasts a full 90 minutes. He's very often wanting to come off around 70 minutes, and he’s always off around 80 minutes.
“I appreciate that he is built well, but if he had half a stone less weight that would be a real difference maker and could see him stay in the Premier League. His discipline is very poor as well.
“He is Sheffield United's best player, and we absolutely love him but these are the things that might prevent him from getting a move. Not because he isn’t capable but because what he's worth to Sheffield United might be more than a team is willing to pay due to those negative aspects.
“He could well sign for Leeds United or Burnley, he certainly fits into their side. I also think he would be a very good option for Everton. Linking up with Illiman Ndiaye would make me feel sick and very jealous but all power to them.
“He owes Sheffield United nothing, he's been a brilliant player for us and I hope we can see him in the red and white stripes for a little bit longer!”
After suffering play-off final heartbreak against Sunderland, it seems almost impossible for the Blades to retain their star player this summer.
Just as Sheffield United capitalised on Coventry City’s Wembley woes, fate seems to have struck Chris Wilder’s side with a similar blow.
If Everton and Leeds United submit a realistic proposal for Hamer’s services, the Blades won’t have much choice but to cash in.
Sheffield United acquired the Dutchman for £15 million in 2023, so they are unlikely to settle for anything less than that figure this summer.
