Wrexham’s late push fell short as a 2-2 home draw with Middlesbrough, coupled with Hull’s 2-1 win at Norwich, left them seventh and handed Hull sixth and a two-legged tie with Millwall.

Wrexham had started the day in sixth and were applauded off at the Racecourse after failing to win despite Sam Smith scoring. According to NY Times, it was a disappointing end to an otherwise encouraging campaign.

This is the club’s best league finish, surpassing 15th in the old Second Division in 1978-79. They are also Wales’ top team for the first time in a quarter of a century, a surge that followed Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac’s 2020 takeover after fears of dropping to the sixth tier.

Parkinson said many long-standing clubs would have coveted Wrexham’s position, while admitting his side could not quite take the last step. He felt losing to Grimsby in 2022 hurt more but stiffened resolve, with Reynolds and Rob Mac urging him to keep the core and add depth.

After a first season at this level in 43 years, Parkinson intends to build again. Former Bradford joint-chairman Julian Rhodes describes him as relentless.

Improvements are needed. Only bottom club Sheffield Wednesday, with 44, conceded more home goals than Wrexham’s 37, and greater midfield control is required.

Recruitment will be pivotal, though not on last summer’s scale when 13 arrived. Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers should be strong next year and, while Anfield and Old Trafford remain off-limits for league games, Wrexham will pursue promotion.
