Wrexham are plotting an extended international break under FIFA’s new calendar, blending recovery and rehab before the Championship resumes on 10 October with a trip to Derby County.
According to NY Times, the top two divisions now shut down for two autumn windows, of three weeks and two weeks, replacing three shorter autumn breaks.
Kieffer Moore and Danny Ward are with Wales for Nations League ties against Portugal, Denmark twice and Norway. Nathan Broadhead’s thigh injury rules him out, and Liberato Cacace withdrew from New Zealand’s games with Australia.
Issa Kabore and Jacques Ekomie could feature for Burkina Faso and Gabon in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, while Bailey Cadamarteri is away with Jamaica for the Concacaf Nations League.
At home, heavy-load players get a breather and the injured continue rehab. A friendly is planned late next week, either in-house or behind closed doors, to keep sharpness before league action returns. Parkinson accepts there will be trial and error.
Saturday offered a response to the six-goal loss at West Ham United, with victory over Southampton and Ben Sheaf’s first start since 21 February. He played 65 minutes before Matty James came on, and now follows a bespoke programme under head of performance, medicine and sports science Kevin Mulholland.
Sheaf sees the break as a mini pre-season and, if progress continues, may feature in the friendly. Danny Imray felt hamstring tightness in training, and Ollie Rathbone’s ankle problem was not serious but kept him out against Southampton.
