Wrexham are attempting to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, with permanent and loan options under discussion.

Sunderland Echo reports that the Championship club hope to reach an agreement for around £seven million, and would prefer either a straight loan or an initial loan with an option or obligation to buy, though a fee could be paid.

Patterson is expected to leave after falling behind Robin Roefs in the goalkeeping pecking order. The 26-year-old has returned to the Academy of Light and is training with the senior group while his future is resolved.

Millwall want him back following a successful loan in the second half of last season. He arrived at The Den in February after being limited to one senior appearance earlier in the campaign.

Rangers have been discouraged by Sunderland’s valuation. Wolverhampton Wanderers have considered him but would need to move a goalkeeper on before making an approach.

Patterson spent time on the senior bench in 2018-19 and made his competitive debut in an EFL Trophy defeat at Fleetwood Town in November 2020. A 2021-22 loan at Notts County ended with a recall amid injuries, after which he became first choice and played through the League One play-offs as Sunderland beat Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley to end a four-year third-tier stay.

Three years later he was central again at Wembley, making two important saves against Sheffield United, including a crucial second-half stop while trailing, before Régis Le Bris’ side recovered to win 2-1 and secure promotion to the Premier League.
