According to Sunderland Echo, Wrexham are attempting to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, with both a permanent transfer and a loan under consideration. The Championship club value a deal at around £7 million and could prefer either a straight loan or an initial loan with an option or obligation to buy.
The asking price has discouraged Rangers from progressing their interest, while Millwall want him back after a successful loan last season. Wolverhampton Wanderers have considered a move but would need to move a goalkeeper before acting.
Patterson is expected to leave the Stadium of Light this summer after slipping behind Robin Roefs in the pecking order. He has returned to the Academy of Light and is training with the senior goalkeepers while his future is resolved.
After time on the bench in 2018-19, he made his senior debut in an EFL Trophy defeat at Fleetwood Town in November 2020. A loan to Notts County followed in 2021-22 before a recall amid injuries, and he then established himself as first choice.
He featured throughout the League One play-offs as Sunderland beat Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley to end a four-year third-tier stay. Three years later, he made key saves against Sheffield United at Wembley before Régis Le Bris’ side came from behind to win 2-1 and reach the Premier League. Roefs’ arrival and form cut his minutes last season, prompting a February loan to Millwall after just one senior appearance earlier in the campaign.
