It has been an excellent start to life back in League One for Wrexham.

After winning back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One in the last two seasons, many questioned how Phil Parkinson's Red Dragons would fare in the third tier, but it has not taken them long to adapt to playing at a higher level.

Wrexham currently sit fourth in the table after picking up seven points from their first three games of the campaign, and they secured an emphatic 3-0 win over Reading at the SToK Cae Ras on Saturday thanks to goals from Ollie Palmer, Elliot Lee and Andy Cannon.

It has been a busy summer for the Red Dragons following promotion, with seven new players arriving at the club during the transfer window so far, and there could be more to come before Friday's deadline.

There have also been a number of departures, including Rob Lainton, Aaron Hayden, Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe, Callum McFadzean and Luke Young moving on, while Luke McNicholas and Jordan Davies have made loan moves to Rochdale and Grimsby Town respectively.

Wrexham told to sign former Manchester City midfielder Josh Adam

There is still space to add to Parkinson's squad before Friday's transfer deadline though to give him even more depth to choose from.

And FLW's Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice believes the Red Dragons should make a move for former Manchester City attacking midfielder Josh Adam to provide competition for Lee.

Lee has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign, scoring one goal and providing two assists in the first four games, but Liam says his performance levels dropped towards the back end of last season, and he believes Adam - who is a free agent after being released by the Premier League champions and therefore could be signed after the deadline - could be a good back-up.

"I think realistically the position that we need to fill now is the attacking midfielder position as back up for Elliot Lee," Liam said.

"Towards the end of last season, you could tell he was getting a bit tired and he's not necessarily started this season on fire, so I think he just needs a little bit of competition in that area.

"One player I think we could realistically go for is young former Manchester City attacking midfielder called Josh Adam, who is available on a free.

"He wouldn't count towards the league registration rules as he's under 21 and I think he would be a good back up to Elliot Lee."

Adam never made a senior appearance during his time at City after joining from Celtic in August 2020, but he has featured for Scotland at Under-21 level, and the Daily Mail claimed earlier this summer that the 20-year-old was attracting interest from the Bundesliga and the Belgian Pro League.

That interest has not come to fruition yet though, and the Hollywood factor when it comes to Wrexham could be a big pull - if they were to make the move.

Josh Adam could be a gamble worth taking for Wrexham

It remains to be seen whether Adam will emerge on Wrexham's radar or if he would be willing to drop down to League One, but Liam is right that he could be a good addition for the Red Dragons.

Parkinson has a number of excellent options at his disposal in the forward areas, but attacking midfield is one position that the club are light in, and bringing in a player like Adam could help take the pressure off Lee.

As shown by their outstanding start to the season, Wrexham already have a strong squad, and with the club once again taking a sensible approach in the transfer market this summer, Parkinson will only make further signings if he feels they can bolster the team.

However, based on the early evidence, the Red Dragons look more than capable of challenging for a third consecutive promotion this campaign, so owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney may be tempted to fund one more high-profile addition.
