Southampton stump Birmingham City

Birmingham City were yet to be defeated in the WSL2 prior to their meeting with promotion hopefuls Southampton. However, despite dominating possession throughout, Birmingham couldn’t convert their 18 shots at goal into clear-cut chances and Southampton won 2-1.

The first strike came from Southampton captain Atlanta Primus in the 22nd minute, and the second, straight after kick off. Midfielder Chloe Peplow pressured Birmingham’s players and hit a brilliant strike from distance to beat Lucy Thomas in goal. Birmingham pulled one back late on through former Chelsea forward Ji So-yun as a consolation goal. The Blues drop to second following the result, while the Saints jump up to 5th.

Charlton Athletic go top of the table

High flying Charlton Athletic earned a 2-0 win over Sunderland to go top of the WSL2 table, thanks to a Jodie Hutton brace. The first goal was a cross-cum-shot from the edge of the area that looped over Sunderland goalkeeper Grace Moloney. Hutton’s second came in the 68th minute, as a deep cross found her under pressure but she was able to muscle through to get a clean header and secure the points.

Charlton remain the only unbeaten WSL2 side this season and they remain undefeated in 16 games. More good news followed for Charlton as their goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse was nominated for Player of the Month.

Nottingham Forest thrash Portsmouth

Nottingham Forest enjoyed a statement 4-1 win over Portsmouth in their latest home match, despite Pompey taking an early lead.

The second half saw Forest come alive with 21 attempts and 10 shots on target. Just before the hour mark, Forest scored from a corner converted at the back post by Jessie Stapleton. Followed up by a stunning strike from summer signing Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah. The forward spotted Emily Batty off of her line and hit the ball beyond the back-peddling goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

Forest killed the game off with two stoppage time goals from substitutes Aimee Jessica Claypole and Hollie Odding.

Bristol City snub Durham

Durham returned home from their trip down south empty-handed after losing 2-1 to Bristol City.

Robins goalkeeper Fran Bentley was forced into an early save from Poppy Pritchard as the Manchester City loanee found herself unchallenged with the ball in the penalty area. It was then the turn of Durham’s Cat Shepherd to keep the score at 0-0 as Vicky Losada fired a fierce strike and the goalkeeper parried. From the resulting corner, a loose ball bounced around the Durham penalty area before being smashed in by ex-Chelsea star Sophie Ingle.

In the second half, it was smart distribution from Bristol City goalkeeper Bentley, who launched a ball out to Mari Ward. Then, via an Emily Syme cross, captain Losada stooped to head in. Durham got one back through Mollie Lambert, which made it nerve-jangling for the home fans but the Robins who came out on top.

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United draw 2-2

Crystal Palace hosted Newcastle United with both teams having promotion aspirations, but neither team setting the league alight yet. In the first half, both teams were restricted to shots from distance. Palace midfielder Annabel Blanchard looked to offer the most in attack for either side.

The second half was where the match came alive. Palace took the lead after a good cross from Blanchard found teammate Kirsty Howat to head beyond Femke Liefting in goal. The momentum kept going in the direction of the Eagles as they flew forward through Josie Green, who crossed the ball into a busy penalty area for the clearance to land on the boot of Molly-Mae Sharp. She perfectly bent a shot into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Newcastle left it late to get back into the match as Oona Sevenius pulled a goal back on the 87th minute. The Magpies were keen to restart quickly and it paid off. Newcastle won only their second corner of the match and Morgan Gautrat scored straight from the set piece to equalise in style.

Sheffield United beat Ipswich Town in five-goal thriller

Sheffield United hosted Ipswich at Bramall Lane with new manager Luke Turner at the helm, in what transpired to be a feisty goal fest.

Bottom of the table United faced the newly promoted Tractor Girls. Ipswich were caught playing out from the back and Charlie Devlin was on hand to tap in the rebound from an initial save to make it 1-0 for the Blades. Amy Andrews then made it 2-0 after breaking beyond defenders to fire beyond Natalia Rae Negri in goal.

The second half was more of the same as Andrews bagged her brace of the match with a pinpoint finish into the bottom left corner. Ipswich Town didn’t give up though, and pulled a brace back through forward Rianna Dean. Her first pressured the Blades defenders, who showed up old frailties, and Dean coolly finished to make it 3-1. Her second came on the hour mark, after a corner wasn’t fully cleared and Dean rose to nod in the cross.

However, Ipswich were then halted in their fight back as midfielder Bethan Roe was shown a straight red card for what looked like a swing of a punch, having been pressured on the ball by Sheffield United substitute Matilda Bristow.
