Xabi Alonso has refused to discuss Granit Xhaka after Chelsea’s attempt to sign the Sunderland captain fell through.

According to Sunderland Echo, Chelsea explored a deal for the Switzerland international and Xhaka was understood to be tempted by the chance to link up again with Alonso after their successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunderland held firm, insisting their skipper was not for sale and rejecting efforts to negotiate. Xhaka only arrived from Leverkusen last summer in a package worth up to around £17million, and he is viewed as central to Régis Le Bris’ plans for the club’s European return.

While initially open to talks, Xhaka later reaffirmed his commitment following discussions with the hierarchy. The lure of captaining Sunderland in Europe, alongside the longer-term project, proved influential in his decision to stay.

Asked about the pursuit, Alonso offered no further detail. “Granit Xhaka? No comment on players who are not here with us.” Sunderland now regard the matter as closed as Xhaka prepares to lead Le Bris’ side into the 2026/27 campaign.
