Xabi Alonso breaks silence on failed Chelsea move for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka with 12-word response | OneFootball

Xabi Alonso refused to be drawn on Granit Xhaka after Chelsea’s failed attempt to sign Sunderland’s captain.

Sunderland Echo reports that the Chelsea head coach was asked about Xhaka after the move collapsed. Chelsea had explored a deal to take the Switzerland international to Stamford Bridge, and Xhaka was attracted by the chance to work with Alonso again following their successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunderland kept a consistent stance, insisting their captain was not for sale and rejecting efforts to negotiate. The Black Cats viewed him as central to Régis Le Bris’ plans as the club return to European competition.

Xhaka only arrived from Leverkusen last summer in a package worth up to around £17million. He was initially open to talks, then reaffirmed his commitment after discussions with the club.

The prospect of captaining Sunderland in Europe, along with the longer-term ambitions set out to him, influenced his decision to stay at the Stadium of Light.

Asked for an update, Alonso replied, "Granit Xhaka? No comment on players who are not here with us." Sunderland consider the matter closed as Xhaka prepares to lead Le Bris’ side into the 2026/27 campaign.
