Xabi Alonso will take charge of his 100th game when Bayer Leverkusen host Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon. It’s the Spaniard’s first managerial role at the highest level and after a difficult first few months in charge, Alonso’s career is on an upward trajectory.

After replacing Gerardo Seoane after eight matchdays in the 2022/23 season, Alonso guided Bayer 04 to European football. And then last year was a historic one for Die Werkself. An entire domestic campaign unbeaten resulted in their maiden Bundesliga title, and a German Cup victory. Not only that, but Alonso also guided Leverkusen to the Europa League final, going unbeaten prior to their defeat against Atalanta at the final hurdle.

Of his 99 games in charge, Alonso has won 67, drawn 20 and lost just 12.

Speaking in Friday’s press conference ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s game against Holstein Kiel, Alonso said: “A lot has happened, and we’ve all been through a lot together. The development of the entire club and the team is great, and I’m proud to be a part of this process. I’ve learned a lot, and at times it was very hard. I won’t forget the first few months in particular. I hope we can celebrate together with a win tomorrow.”
