Diego Simeone was the big talking point of the first matchweek of the UEFA Champions League this midweek as the Atletico Madrid manager was involved in a heated exchange with Liverpool fans at Anfield.

During the final phase of the game, when Liverpool sealed the win through Virgil van Dijk, Simeone was seen rushing towards the stands with aggression. He was trying to get back at one of the Liverpool fans.

The Atletico Madrid manager later revealed that the fan was hurling insults at him throughout the entirety of the game, especially after Liverpool scored the late winner.

Xabi Alonso offers his thoughts on Simeone incident

Needless to say, Simeone has found himself in the spotlight following the clash with Liverpool fans this midweek.

But the Argentine coach has received support from Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso, who claimed that these pitchside events have gotten out of hand lately.

“Things have been out of hand on the pitches for a long time,” said Alonso (h/t Mundo Deportivo), whose Real Madrid side secured a 2-1 win over Marseille in their opening Champions League game.

The former Bayer Leverkusen coach added that there is not much coaches can do to change these trends.

“In an ideal world, we wouldn’t have to endure these situations. I don’t complain; I don’t suffer too much, but other colleagues suffer more,” said Alonso.

“Unfortunately, you have to learn to live with it, or it takes you out of the situation you have to be in more, and you see unpleasant situations,” he added.

Finally, Simeone reiterated that these kinds of incidents have been growing exponentially and that coaches must always be careful.

“I haven’t had too many incidents, but on football pitches this has been getting out of hand for a while,” he concluded.

Nevertheless, Alonso will look on his own task ahead, with Real Madrid set to face Espanyol in their next game in La Liga, where we might finally see the return of Endrick.
