Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Athletic Club at San Mames came as a massive one in the context of the team’s form – especially given how it was their first win in four league games away from home.
After three consecutive draws on the road in La Liga, Xabi Alonso looked to change things up and find a winning formula. His plans began well before kick-off, and he found a novelty even in his tactics on the night.
Needless to say, his new idea worked like a gem and helped Los Blancos to one of their most dominant performances of the season and AS reveal how many in the club feel it could well be the turning point they have so badly required.
On the night at San Mames, Alonso deployed his men in a 4-4-2 formation to begin with.
Alvaro Carreras and Trent Alexander-Arnold flanked Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militao while Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde played as advanced midfielders ahead of the French double-pivot of Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.
In attack, however, Alonso morphed his team to a 3-5-2 where Tchouameni joined with the central defenders while the full-backs pushed up to add numbers in midfield.

Moreover, their presence out wide saw Bellingham and Valverde drift to more central positions where they could shine.
The tactical novelty helped Los Blancos regain possession more easily and press better off the ball with every player on the field looking closer to their most effective version.
Vinicius Jr. bloomed with less defensive responsibility while Kylian Mbappe continued to be the focal point in attack. The midfielders had well-defined roles and Tchouameni served as the heart of the team’s buildup with a staggering 104 touches.
Bellingham returned to an advanced position and did exceedingly well playing just off Mbappe, while even Trent looked on song before his injury having received the attacking freedom.
The novel formation, thus, comes as a much-needed boost at the right time for Alonso and helps him unlock the best possible version of his team. There is serious hope that it serves as a turning point for Real Madrid’s season.
