Teun Koopmeiners was trialled as a centre-back by Luciano Spalletti last season because Juventus did not have enough cover in that position. His recent performance for the Netherlands has raised the question of whether that could eventually become his long-term role.
Since joining Juventus during the summer of 2024, Koopmeiners has struggled to establish himself in midfield. He had excelled in that position at Atalanta, which convinced the Bianconeri to sign him, but he has not yet produced the outstanding moments that prompted the move from La Dea.
Juventus still considers the Dutchman a high-quality player who can succeed at the club. However, this is now his third season in Turin, and he remains some distance from reaching his expected level.
Koopmeiners impresses in defence
Koopmeiners remains an important player for the Netherlands despite his limited club football and the arrival of Xavi Hernández as the national team manager. Xavi trusted him to start the Nations League match against Serbia, but used him in central defence alongside Virgil van Dijk.
The decision surprised many observers, yet Koopmeiners made the most of his ball-playing ability and scored one of the goals in the 2-1 victory. His performance provided evidence that he can contribute from a deeper position.
According to Calciomercato, Koopmeiners lacks the speed required to play in Xavi’s midfield. However, the manager wants a defender who can build attacks from the back, and that requirement makes the Juventus player suitable for the role.

Koopmeiners could now develop into a centre-back, although he is unlikely to receive regular opportunities in that position at Juventus. The Bianconeri already have a strong defensive partnership, which would leave little room for him to establish himself at the back.
That does not rule out the role becoming an important part of his future. His technique, passing range and ability to read the game could allow him to operate effectively as a ball-playing defender.
For now, Juventus will continue to view him primarily as a midfielder. However, his performance for the Netherlands has shown that a permanent move into defence could eventually offer Koopmeiners a new route to fulfil his potential.
