Xavi Hernandez has applied to become Netherlands head coach and could take the role. De Telegraaf reports he is among the candidates.

Free since ending his Barcelona stint, the 46-year-old is in contention to succeed Ronald Koeman. He coached Barcelona from 2021 to 2024. In mid-July he expressed a desire to become a national team coach.

He was reportedly interviewed by KNVB officials. That would mirror Roberto Martinez.

Martinez was linked as a strong candidate earlier on Wednesday. Other names circulating in recent days include Peter Bosz, Arne Slot, Erik Ten Hag and Michael Reiziger.

The Netherlands were knocked out in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup by Morocco on 30 June, drawing 1-1 then losing 2-3 on penalties.
