Flamengo host Independiente Medellín at the Maracanã on Thursday night, a reunion with forward Yony González. The Colombian has faced Flamengo 10 times.
The clubs have met only once before, in 1964. Globo.com reports that this latest chapter comes with González now at the Colombian side.
González first met Flamengo with Junior Barranquilla in the 2017 Copa Sudamericana semi-finals. He assisted Teo Gutiérrez at the Maracanã, but Flamengo won both legs and reached the final.
Most of his meetings came with Fluminense. Across five Fla-Flus, he assisted Luciano for a 1-0 win that eliminated Flamengo in the Taça Guanabara semi-final.
In the Taça Rio semi-final he equalised from the spot for 1-1, a scoreline that would have sent Fluminense through. In stoppage time Everton Ribeiro scored a penalty to put Flamengo into the final.
González scored against Flamengo again in 2023 in the Campeonato Brasileiro. The defeat that ended their title push came against Atlético-MG at the Maracanã, and the preceding Fla-Flu also checked their momentum under Tite.
He faced Flamengo three more times, once with Ceará in 2021 and twice for Atlético-GO in 2024, without note. Now 31, he joined Independiente Medellín this season and has seven appearances, two starts, with no goals or assists.
Closely associated with Fluminense, notably for a decisive assist at Inter in the 2023 Libertadores semi-final, he is still pushing for minutes. He should begin on the bench on Thursday, for a 21:30 Brasília time kick-off at the Maracanã.
