Will Alexander Nübel stay at VfB Stuttgart or will he return to FC Bayern? The goalkeeping question continues to be a topic of conversation. A statement from the Swabians‘ sporting director has now raised eyebrows – and opened up new possibilities
It doesn’t seem impossible that the 29-year-old will remain in Stuttgart. Although Nübel still belongs to FC Bayern, there has been no final decision on the future number one on the Isar so far. On Sky90 – the soccer debate , VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth also commented on the situation – and left room for speculation: „He doesn’t have any watertight plans yet and Bayern Munich don’t have a clear goalkeeping constellation yet either, so you can’t rule anything out.“
The goalkeeper, who moved to Munich from Schalke on a free transfer in 2020, is held in the highest regard at VfB. According to Wohlgemuth, Nübel is „an absolutely undisputed number one“, „likeable“, „leads the way“ and is „a very important cornerstone in our team“. His role in the team council also underlines his importance to the Swabians

After two years on loan in Monaco and his current stint in Stuttgart, Nübel’s future remains open. While he is a regular at VfB, his path to becoming number one at FC Bayern appears to be blocked by Manuel Neuer. Although Neuer’s contract with the record champions only runs until the summer of 2026, an extension for a further year seems likely. Nübel’s contract, on the other hand, runs until 2030. However, a successor is already lined up in Jonas Urbig. The 21-year-old, currently number two, is regarded internally as a promising player and is being developed for the long term
Nevertheless, Nübel is said not to shy away from potential competition. According to information from transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, the keeper is currently sounding out the market to weigh up his options. However, there have been no concrete offers so far
In the long term, Stuttgart are planning with another name anyway: Dennis Seimen, currently on loan to Paderborn, is set to stand between the posts in the coming years. Nübel, on the other hand, remains a topic with many unanswered questions for the time being – and no clear answer.
