Under-fire striker Yuri Alberto was booed off as Corinthians lost 2-0 to Argentina’s Platense, with coach Fernando Diniz offering his backing.

According to Globo.com, the 25-year-old has scored only one goal in his last 14 games and produced another quiet display on Wednesday. He was substituted after 35 minutes of the second half at Neo Química Arena.

The reaction came a little over 10 days after Yuri Alberto publicly stated his wish to leave in the next transfer window.

Diniz said the situation was natural given recent events, described the forward as experienced despite his age after starting early at Santos, and insisted he has the resilience to handle it. He added that the player will emerge stronger and noted mutual affection between Alberto, the club and its supporters.

Alberto is expected to start again on Saturday at 17:30 Brasília time against Grêmio in Porto Alegre, in the 18th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

Brazil’s transfer window runs from 20 July to 11 September, and so far the striker has not received offers from European clubs.
