Medhi Benatia’s resignation has cast doubt on the loyal lieutenants he installed across Marseille. According to L'Équipe, deputy Federico Balzaretti could handle interim duties, with no long-term guarantees.
Ali Zarrak, 33, arrived with Stéphane Tessier, backed Benatia and handled awkward dealings with players, agents and rival clubs, drawing enemies. As Pro 2 lead, his conduct in the stands drew complaints, and he has privately linked his fate to Benatia.
Recruited by Benatia, Bob Tahri moved from the player-care programme into nutrition, became sporting coordinator and runs the WhatsApp group, where late training updates have fuelled tensions and logistical problems.
Ex-Udinese team-mate Thomas Heurtaux joined as Roberto De Zerbi’s translator, his Italian useful although some saw him as Benatia’s eyes. Despite Benatia’s denials, he could send Heurtaux voice notes during matches. With De Zerbi’s staff leaving, Heurtaux now assists interim Pancho Abardonado and was seen talking with Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg on Friday.
Aziz Mady Mogne, also from Lorient, backed Benatia without seeking power, avoided turf wars with Giovanni Rossi, who is negotiating his exit, and earned widespread appreciation, notably during last season’s Rome camps.
Marseille-born Lassad Titou Hasni took over the academy after Marco Otero’s departure, led the Youth League side eliminated by Real Madrid and reshaped staffing, naming Olivier Bijotat and strengthening links to the first team.
Communications director Bel-Abbès Bouaissi, an ex beIN Sports producer supported by consultant Enrica Tarchi, toughened external relations at Benatia’s request and pushed a collaboration policy that favoured friendly outlets and boycotted critical media.
