Groningen beat Ajax 3-1 at Euroborg as Oskar Zawada's second half double lifted the hosts from 11th to 10th in the Eredivisie.
In the sixth minute, Thom van Bergen swept in from the centre of the box after a clever through ball by Dies Janse to put Groningen ahead.
Godenzonen levelled when Davy Klaassen nodded in Anton Gaaei's cross (30.). Etienne Vaessen had earlier denied long-range efforts before going off at the break, with Hidde Jurjus taking over in goal.
After the restart, half time substitute Zawada restored the lead, finishing Marvin Peersman's knock-down (65.). The striker then glanced in Thijmen Blokzijl's delivery (72.) to settle the game.
Wouter Prins struck the bar late, and Jurjus preserved the cushion with a save from Rayane Bounida in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time.
Groningen registered six shots on target from 13 attempts. Godenzonen had 60.3% possession and 13 attempts but were picked off after the interval.
Godenzonen remain third. Next, Groningen visit PEC Zwolle, while Godenzonen host Sparta Rotterdam.
