Zé Ricardo has been sacked by Sporting Cristal after only two months in charge, following the club’s early Copa Libertadores exit and poor domestic form.

The club said in a statement that the parties had mutually agreed to end his tenure, and thanked him and assistants Ricardo Colbachini and Fabio Eiras for their work and professionalism.

Ricardo’s deal had been due to run until December 2027, but it was cut short after 15 games. Across the spell he won two, drew two and lost nine. In the Libertadores, Cristal finished third in their section, behind Cerro Porteño and Palmeiras.

He first rose to prominence by winning the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior in 2016, then was promoted to Flamengo’s senior side and lifted the 2017 Campeonato Carioca. Flamengo challenged near the top of the Brasileirão before fading, and he was dismissed.

Since leaving, he has had stints with Vasco, Botafogo, Fortaleza, Internacional, Qatar SC (CAT), Shimizu (JAP), Cruzeiro, Goiás, Criciúma and, in 2026, Sporting Cristal, of Peru.
