Manchester United spent the final days of the summer transfer window offloading their high-profile flops in order to trim their wage bill.
Rasmus Hojlund, Jadon Sancho and Antony all departed Old Trafford on deadline day. Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens was the only arrival during this period.
Having eased their financial concerns, United have started working on their January transfer plans, as per a report.
According to Givemesport, United have “wasted no time pinpointing possible additions” to Ruben Amorim’s squad.
It is understood the Red Devils have included Sporting CP defender Zeno Debast on their shortlist. The report states: “United are planning to keep tabs on Debast before potentially making a move to lure him away from Sporting.”
The Belgian defender is known for his strong aerial presence and composure in possession, making him an ideal fit for Ruben Amorim’s back three system at Old Trafford.
Amorim signed the centre-back from Anderlecht in 2024 and is “open to sealing a reunion” in his attempts to make United’s backline a nightmare for attackers to play against.
The Portuguese tactician is aware of Debast’s ability, but United will still send scouts to monitor his performances this season.
The 21-year-old’s contract in Lisbon includes a £70m release clause. It is claimed that Sporting will not consider the possibility of a cut-price deal in January.
United mostly focused on revamping their attack in the summer. However, they may be forced to address their defence sooner rather than later.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Harry Maguire has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia. The veteran defender has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford. He would reportedly consider a move to the SPL at the end of the season.
At the end of last term, United also bid farewell to Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof. The Swede has now joined Aston Villa.
