Zina, the fan behind the “Ronaldo, brilha muito no Corinthians” catchphrase, has reappeared on social media to discuss Memphis Depay’s exit from Corinthians. According to Meu Timao, his remarks come amid talk of a possible twist in the saga.

In an interview with comedian and reporter Daniel Peixoto, known as Alfinete, he praised Memphis as a decisive presence for Corinthians.

He said he wants the Dutchman to remain, calling him tenacious, skilful and a goalscorer, and noting his strike against São Paulo.

Zina became a Brazilian football meme between 2009 and 2011 through the Pânico TV programme on RedeTV!, thanks to the line “Ronaldo, brilha muito no Corinthians”. The phrase originated outside Pacaembu on 29 January 2009, the day of Ronaldo’s Corinthians debut.

Ronaldo later said the phenomenon became a major irritation in his life.

In subsequent years Zina stepped away from the spotlight and faced drug dependency and schizophrenia, alongside childhood trauma after his father’s death and a brother’s disappearance. He underwent more than 10 hospitalisations.

In July this year he reappeared online after dance influencer Allan Dereck filmed him walking in São Paulo.
