A vital player for Manchester City avoids a suspension for comments made about the referees and VAR

Following a disappointing 2-all draw with Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a match where Manchester City blew a 2-nil lead, Rodri accused referee Rob Jones of not being neutral amongst other topics. Dominic Solanke’s challenge on Marc Guehi that directly led to Spurs’ first goal in the Premier League fixture at the beginning of February drew the ire of City’s midfield general. The possibility of Rodri being suspended was very real. Manchester City will be relieved as Rodri’s punishment for his comments has now been revealed. Rodri has been fined and won’t miss any games due to his comments.
In a statement released by the FA today, it has been revealed that Rodri has been fined £80,000 and warned about his future conduct. The Spanish midfielder was charged with acting in an improper manner by making comments that imply bias and/or question the integrity of match officials or officials, contrary to FA Rule E3.1. Rodri admitted to the charge against him.
An independent Regulatory Commission has fined the Manchester City midfielder and warned about his future conduct. With the matter now dealt with, Manchester City and Rodri can move on from the affair.
It will be a relief for Manchester City that Rodri has avoided a suspension. That possibility was very real following Rodri’s comments about the referee after City’s draw with Tottenham. Instead, City’s midfield general has received a heavy fine for his outburst. The matter is now closed. City and Rodri can move on and focus on the remainder of the 2025/26 season with the matter now dealt with.
Rodri has been fined for his comments about the referee. Although Rodri’s frustration was understandable, he risked a suspension due to his comments. The matter has now been dealt with. Manchester City can now move forward knowing that Rodri will be available for their crucial domestic fixtures ahead.
