Accrington Stanley have signed former Sunderland defender Joe Anderson on a two-year contract after his exit from Barrow.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 25-year-old departed Barrow after their League Two relegation and makes an immediate return to the EFL.

Anderson moved to Barrow from Sunderland in January, featuring 14 times across the remainder of the season.

The left-sided centre-back switched from Everton to Sunderland in January 2023 and first featured the following month, coming on late in a Championship match against Millwall that finished 1-1.

He played seven first-team games for Sunderland and spent 2023-24 on loan at League One Shrewsbury Town, making 30 appearances before returning to Wearside.

A Liverpool academy graduate, he joined Everton aged 15 in 2016, signed his first professional deal in 2019 and later extended it before heading to Sunderland.

Accrington head coach John Doolan said Anderson’s EFL experience and left-sided profile can help next season, adding that he knows the defender will seize the opportunity.

The move comes amid a busy summer for several former Sunderland players, with Anderson aiming to re-establish himself in League Two after a brief spell at Barrow.
