The Spanish football federation announced that Adrián Cordero Vega will referee Valencia against Osasuna at Mestalla on matchday 26 of the Primera División, with Raúl Martín González on VAR. The fixture is viewed as a key test in the fight to steer clear of the bottom places.
Carlos Corberán’s side face a real examination to move away from the lower reaches and to capitalise on Deportivo Alavés’s stumble on Friday at the Ciutat de València. Competitive tension is high and attention again falls on the official.
The choice of Cordero Vega has not gone unnoticed around Valencia. A notable precedent came on matchday 16 of 2020/21 at Los Cármenes, a 2-1 defeat that included two red cards and left the visitors with nine men.
Jason Remeseiro was sent off for a second booking after a clash with Domingos Duarte, while Gonçalo Guedes saw a straight red for protesting a foul that was not given. That performance provoked strong debate and lingering mistrust among some supporters.
Across all meetings with Cordero Vega in charge, Valencia have played nine times, winning four, drawing three and losing two. They have scored 14 and conceded nine.
The picture improves markedly at Mestalla, with three home games producing three wins, seven goals for and one against. Away from home there has been one win in six, alongside a negative goal differential.
