Ally McCoist has backed a summer move to Rangers for Leeds United striker Joel Piroe, with the forward’s future beyond this season uncertain after sparse Premier League action.
"Joel Piroe would be a great signing for Rangers. He probably hasn't done as well as you'd have hoped in the Premier League, but I've seen enough of him. As a Rangers supporter, I wouldn't mind that at all. I think he could certainly do a job up here. I think he'd adapt to this football as well," said McCoist, speaking to talkSPORT.
Piroe has slipped behind summer arrivals Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha in the No. 9 pecking order. He has not started a Premier League game since August, has one FA Cup goal and has missed three penalties in normal time or shootouts.
Daniel Farke sought another striker in January, with a bid for then-Wolves frontman Jorgen Strand Larsen, and attacking reinforcements are set to be revisited this summer. Interest emerged in January from the Championship and abroad, with Rangers among those linked.
Links between the clubs could aid talks. 49ers Enterprises, in charge at Elland Road since 2023, took over at Ibrox last summer, with Whites chairman Paraag Marathe initially vice-chairman there before stepping down. They remain in control at Rangers, and a January loan request from Celtic for Piroe was met with bemusement.
Leeds are more likely to sell than loan. Having paid £12m in total, amortised over a four-year deal signed in 2023, Piroe’s book value is about £3m, so any higher fee would count as PSR profit. He now has over a dozen Premier League appearances, scored 19 in 46 to win the 2024/25 Championship Golden Boot, and made his Suriname debut in March, making an offer comfortably above that benchmark likely.
