Ruben Amorim says that not even the Pope could convince him to change his tactical approach as Man Utd manager.
The Portuguese tactician is under huge pressure after winning just one of his four games in the new Premier League campaign, the Red Devils’ worst start in 33 years. They also suffered elimination from the League Cup at the hands of fourth-tier Grimsby Town last month.
The 40-year-old has overseen just eight wins in total from 30 league games since replacing Erik ten Hag in the dugout last season, with his win rate in the competition standing at just 26.67 per cent.
Despite the team’s horrendous form, Amorim has rigidly stuck to the preferred 3-4-2-1 formation which brought him success at Sporting Clube de Portugal.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford, the Man Utd boss insisted he would not be moved to alter his approach.
“No, no, no,” he said. “Not once [have I thought about changing]. Not even the Pope [can make me], it will not change.”
Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe flew into Manchester this week for a meeting with the manager, heightening speculation that his job was under threat. Amorim insisted that his system was not the subject of the conversation, but admitted he will make changes to it if given the time.
“This is my job, my responsibility, my life, I will not change that but I will change the system, there will be an evolution but we need to make all the good steps,” he said.
Amorim added that he is concerned about what his squad would think if he changed now and hopes he will remain in the job long enough for it to happen.
“If I’m a player and I have a coach with a lot of pressure to change the system and I’m going to change in this moment, they will look at me in a different way,” he said.
“When you think about the impact of any decision on the team, everything is important.
“This will have an evolution. I’m doing things my way. Some guys do it in a different way. It will change, I hope to have the time to change.”
