Aramburu y Yangel Herrera returned to Real Sociedad training in Zubieta today after experiencing Venezuela’s 24 June earthquakes first-hand. According to Diario Vasco, more than 3,500 are dead, 17,000 injured and over 50,000 missing, with both players well but emotionally affected.
Jon Mikel Aramburu reached Madrid on Monday on a government flight from Valencia, Carabobo. He had seen tremors damage part of Caracas airport’s structure, which stopped him leaving the country to start work with Real.
He was in La Guaira with friends when the quakes hit, in the state suffering the worst devastation. Twenty minutes earlier, the right-back had been inside a building that did not collapse but was damaged by 7.2 and 7.5 shocks.
He was outside talking when the ground began to move. Back in Caracas, he saw damage at the aerodrome and found his building intact, though the area was badly hit, then he began helping those most affected.
Yangel Herrera was also in the country during the tremors. While Aramburu played for La Guaira, Yangel is from that locality of 25,000 inhabitants, and his wife Yerika Ardila said they were safe despite the devastation.
Both could be important this season. Aramburu is the only natural right-back available, pending Iñaki Rupérez’s pre-season response, and with Odriozola injured, Aritz departed and no Sanse alternative he is likely to play a lot. For Yangel, after an 11 million move, a first season ravaged by injuries left him well short of expectations.
