According to Superdeporte, Álvaro Arbeloa could be about to begin his first managerial role in the Premier League, with Fulham in positive talks.

The London club have held discussions with the former Real Madrid coach and he has moved to the front of the queue for the Craven Cottage post.

The vacancy arose after Marco Silva joined Benfica, part of a recent domino effect across European dugouts. Fulham initially explored other options, but Arbeloa’s candidacy has strengthened in recent hours.

For the Salamanca-born coach this would be a major step. After his recent departure from Real Madrid, where he led the first team during the second half of the season, it would mark a debut in one of the sport’s most demanding leagues.

England would not be new ground. Arbeloa played for Liverpool and West Ham, experience that could aid his adaptation to the English game.

There is no official confirmation yet, but signs point to Fulham favouring a young coach with a winning mentality and strong Spanish ties. The coming hours could prove decisive.
